Denise Welch issues brutal dig at Taylor Swift as she discusses son’s romance with star: ‘I’m glad’

Denise Welch has taken a fierce swipe at her son’s ex-girlfriend, pop star Taylor Swift.

The 1975’s frontman, Matty Healey, dated the Blank Space singer, 35, for a few months at the start of 2023 in a brief whirlwind romance.

The 36-year-old son of the Loose Women star is now engaged to 27-year-old model Gabbriette Bechte, after just two years of dating. Swift is also loved up with American football player, Travis Kelce, 35, from the Kansas City Chiefs.

Swift is rumoured to have made several nods to Healey in her recent album, Tortured Poets Department, which was released less than a year after the split.

Welch, 67, took a thinly veiled swipe at her son’s famous ex when asked how she really felt about Swift’s new album during an appearance on Andy Cohen’s Watch What Happens Live on Thursday night.

“Obviously, on pain of death can I talk about that episode, “ the 67-year-old scoffed.

“But being her mother-in-law is a role that I am glad that I lost,” eliciting horrified gasps from the audience.

Welch tried to fan the flames of her previous statement, adding: “Not that I have anything against her at all! It was just — it was tricky.”

“She… listen, you’re not allowed to say anything, and then she writes a whole album about it,” Welch said, taking a swipe at Swift’s loyal fan base.

She kindly added: “But Matty has taken it all in completely good grace. He’s very happy with his amazing fiancée, Gabbriette, who is gorgeous.”

A number of songs from her 2024 album are rumoured to be about the Robbers singer, but fans most notably think But Daddy I Love Him, Down Bad, Fortnight, The Smallest Man Who Ever Lived, and I Can Do It With A Broken Heart are targeted.

Swift started dating Kelce in Summer of 2023, only a few months after she and Healey allegedly called it quits.

The Loose Women commentator was already feeling sheepish before the show ended, after Cohen asked: “‘Are you going to hear from your son?”, in response to her comments about his love life.

“Yeah”, she admitted: “It’s hard to have mums on the telly and I’ve had my issues, well documented in the UK, issues over the years of self-medication and stuff.

“So the fact my kids are so wonderful and grounded and still love us is really quite something, but yes I probably will hear from [Matty]” she laughed.

Healy spends his time between London and Los Angeles, travelling to make music and spend time with his fiancée.

Healey, known for his outlandish and quirky on-stage presence was slammed after his Glastonbury set this summer, after he appeared to swig a pint and smoke cigarettes on stage.

License-fee payers were left horrified at the stunt, with one user writing: “1975, you should be ashamed of your lead singer! My 14 year daughter loves your music but the state of your lead singer took the decision of us not allowing her to watch you perform!

“Drunk and smoking on stage is totally unacceptable in this era!”

Another added: “He’s got a lovely voice but put the cig down Matty.”

Notably the 1975 star has struggled with substance addiction, spending seven weeks in rehab back in 2017.

It’s reported that the singer began using heroin after concerts, which marked the beginning of his struggle, before he started using prescribed opioids and marijuana.

His bandmates intervened in 2018, and the star has reportedly stayed clean since.

Welch has been a staple on Loose Women since 2005, becoming one of the show’s most famous faces.
